"Trees and people used to be good friends. I saw that tree and decided to buy the house. Hope Mom likes it too."

"Okay, let's pay our respects then get home for lunch."

"Can some ghosts live upstairs?"

"Do you like spirits, mommy? Even fuzzy ones?"

"Well, ghosts are a lot harder to see. But when you suddenly move from a lighted room to a dark one, you can't see for a second, and that's when the dust bunnies come out."

"You've got soot sprites in your house."

"Soot sprites? The black puff balls? About this big? They scurry everywhere when you enter a room?"

"That's right. They live in old, empty houses and run all over the place, covering everything with dirt."

"I used to be able to see them when I was your age."

"So you've seen them, too. That's very interesting."

"So they're a kind of ghost, then?"

"Don't worry, dear. They're nothing to be afraid of."

"If they decide you're nice people, they won't harm you, and after a while, they'll just go away."

"I bet they're up in the rafters right now, having a talk about whether or not they should move out."

"Hear that, Mei? They're gonna move out."

"I don't want them to leave."

"What if a huge one came chasing after you?"

"Right. Then you can go to the bathroom by yourself in the middle of the night."

"Who'd like to fetch some water for the pump?"

"I'll go get it."

"I'm going to take this corn to Mommy. It'll make her better."

"Mei's not here. She's gone! I've looked everywhere!"

"You found her sandal... in the pond?"

"I'm scared, Totoro. What if something's happened to Mei?"

"Totoro! The Catbus! You came for me!"

"The next day, they flew with Totoro over the trees, to visit their mother."
